Spark Read vs Bionic Reading

By Spark Read team  ·

Bionic Reading bolds the start of each word. Spark Read shows one word at a time, and has an optional bolding mode too.

TL;DR. Bionic Reading® bolds the first letters of each word so your eye can fill in the rest. It comes as a web app, iOS, Android, Mac and Windows apps, a Chrome extension, a Word add-in and an API. Spark Read is an RSVP reader: one word at a time in a fixed spot, with the focal letter in red. It also has an optional Focus mode that bolds the start of each word instead.

Why Spark Read

Where Spark Read pulls ahead

01

A pace that keeps you moving

Spark Read sets the pace, from 100 to 1000 words per minute, with longer pauses at sentence ends. Bionic Reading changes how text looks but leaves the pace to you.

02

PDFs open directly

Import a PDF, EPUB or Word file straight into Spark Read. Bionic Reading asks you to convert PDFs to Word first, and limits file conversions per month on paid plans.

03

No character limit on the free tier

Paste as much text as you like. Bionic Reading’s free tier caps pasted text at 2,000 characters.

04

Bolding is there if you want it

If you like bolded word starts, Spark Read’s Focus mode shows each word that way, in place of the red focal letter.

Fairness check

When Bionic Reading is the right pick

If you want to read normally, with the whole page in view, in more places — a desktop app, Microsoft Word, your Kindle — Bionic Reading covers more of them, and some readers simply find bolded text more comfortable. Spark Read is the better pick if you want a paced reader for long documents.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does Bionic Reading actually make you read faster?

Independent tests have not found a speed benefit. Readwise’s 2022 experiment with nearly 2,000 readers found no faster reading, and peer-reviewed studies since (Snell, 2024; Parker et al., 2026) found no gain in speed or comprehension. Some people simply find bolded text more comfortable, which is a fine reason to use it.

Is Spark Read’s Focus mode the same as Bionic Reading?

It’s a similar idea: Focus mode bolds the first part of each word. It isn’t the Bionic Reading® method or font, which is a registered trademark. In Spark Read it’s an optional display setting for the one-word-at-a-time reader.

Can I use it with Kindle books or PDFs?

Bionic Reading converts DRM-free EPUB, Word and text files and can send them to your Kindle, but doesn’t open PDFs directly. Spark Read imports PDF, EPUB and Word files directly. Neither opens DRM-protected Kindle books.

Can bolding and one-word display be combined?

Yes, in Spark Read. Turn on Focus mode and each word is shown one at a time with its start bolded, in place of the red focal letter.
